This fundamentally alters software engineering. When a developer describes a requirement – such as adding pagination to a user listing API – an agent doesn’t just offer a code snippet, it locates the endpoint, analyses the existing implementation, adds logic adhering to project patterns, updates tests, and validates that database queries remain efficient.
Traditional AI coding tools focus on syntax and documentation. Agents handle implementation details, allowing engineers to focus on architecture and user experience. This capability has matured from experimental concepts into production-ready systems.
Augment Code, utilising Claude on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, documented an enterprise client completing a project in two weeks that their CTO estimated would require four to eight months with standard development methods.
“Tasks that would take weeks for a developer to learn can now be completed in a day or two,” explained Guy Gur-Ari, Chief Scientist at Augment Code.
Speed gains stem from how agentic AI coding tools remove the cognitive overhead required to navigate complex codebases. Modern applications involve millions of interdependent lines spread across hundreds of files. A simple feature addition often touches APIs, data models, validation logic, and frontend components.
Before writing code, developers typically spend hours tracing function calls and mapping data flow. Agentic systems navigate this complexity instantly; they trace user actions from the frontend through to the database, and identify every location requiring a data structure update. Investigations that typically consume hours are finished in minutes.

Developer onboarding typically consumes weeks as new hires build mental models of the system. Senior engineers lose productive time explaining architectural decisions.
With agentic coding, onboarding time drops to one or two days. The agent serves as a thinking partner with total recall of the codebase. A new team member can ask the agent to explain system architecture or trace feature implementations without interrupting senior staff. This allows developers to contribute to critical systems from day one.
Agentic workflows also change hiring strategies. Organisations can hire for strong fundamentals and rely on agents to bridge specialised knowledge gaps.
Grafana’s implementation demonstrates this capability. Their intelligent assistant enables users to extract insights from observability data using natural language. A user might ask, “What’s causing latency spikes in the checkout service?”. The system identifies relevant metrics and constructs the appropriate PromQL and LogQL queries.
This allows a frontend developer to optimise database queries or a backend specialist to improve UI performance. By utilising agentic AI coding tools, the barrier to contributing across the full stack drops, enabling teams to tackle diverse projects without needing specialist developers for every layer of the stack.
Tools like Claude Code operate directly in the terminal or IDE rather than a browser. Installation takes minutes. Once active, the system analyses project structure and framework conventions.
Developers maintain control; the agent requests approval before making file changes. Teams can start with contained tasks, like adding error handling or writing tests, before expanding to architectural improvements.
This shift breaks the linear relationship between system complexity and team size. A single agent works across multiple areas of a codebase with perfect context retention. A team of ten – supported by agentic AI coding tools – can handle workloads that traditionally require twenty or thirty engineers, maintaining velocity on legacy systems while building new products.
